Regulations governing Au Pairs in the UK

Non-European Union (EU) residents

·         Normal hours of work are for up to 5 hours per day (Monday to Friday), i.e. 25 hours per week) and baby-sitting for up to 2 evenings per week

·         At least two days free per week

·         Must receive a minimum of £60 pocket money per week

·         Allowed time off to attend an English Language course (if relevant)

 

European Union (EU) residents

·         Normal hours of work are for up to 35 hours per week, and baby-sitting for up to 2 evenings per week

·         At least two days free per week

·         Must receive a minimum of £70 - 80 pocket money per week, and every extra hour should be paid at £3.50 minimum

·         Allowed time off to attend an English Language course (if relevant)

Mother’s Helps

·         Mother’s Helps are not Au Pairs, and are expected to work between 8 and 12 hours per day, and to baby-sit up to 2 evenings per week

·         Must have 1½ to 2 full days free per week

·         Must receive a weekly wage ranging from £95 to £150 per week net of tax and National Insurance (NI) contributions

·         Unlike Au Pairs they are not considered to be on a cultural exchange programme, and are therefore classified as employees subject to the minimum wage. Families employing Mother’s Helps are responsible for their National Insurance and tax deductions

 

Au Pair and Mother’s Help Qualifications

All the Au Pairs and Mother’s Helps should ideally meet the following requirements:

·         Be aged between 18 and 27 (Mother’s Help 18 – 30)

·         Be single

·         Have childcare experience in the form of baby sitting or looking after younger brothers or sisters, and even had formal childcare training

·         Possess a good basic knowledge of English

·         Have completed high school education to the equivalent of A level

·         Be motivated and keen (i.e. they want to do a good job, take care of children and improve their English at the same time)

·         Have a doctor’s certificate confirming they are in good mental and physical health

·         Have a valid driver’s licence (if a requirement of placement)

·         Have passed a personal interview with an agency

·         Provide childcare, character and criminal record references

 

Nannies

Nannies are either people who have formal childcare qualifications, or who have the experience of looking after children, but do not possess formal childcare qualifications.

Nannies are responsible for the general well being of children, cooking, laundry and general tidying up after them. This may also include school runs. The standard hours are Monday to Friday 7.00/8.00am until 6.30/7.30pm. nannies are generally not engaged in general household duties.

Weekends are usually free and if the nanny works during the weekend, the nanny should receive an equivalent amount of days off during the week in lieu of this. Holidays are 4 weeks per year excluding Bank holidays.

Live In Nannies

Live In nannies receive full board and lodging, and she must have her own bedroom and television. She normally baby-sits twice a week, which should be arranged in advance. Live In nannies are paid a minimum of between £280 and £350 net per week. The nanny’s salary will depend on the working hours and qualifications of the nanny.

Live Out Nannies

Live Out nannies make their own accommodation arrangements, but are entitled to receive meals whilst on duty with the family. Live Out nannies are paid a minimum of between £350 and £500 net per week. The nanny’s salary depends on the working hours and qualifications of the nanny. Baby-sitting is outside the nanny’s regular employment hours, and as such the nanny will be expected to be remunerated at a rate agreed upon by both parties.

Tour Guide jobs

Tour guides are required usually in the summer months (May to September) and it helps to be able to speak a European language in addition to English.

Halsbury Travel – during school and uni holidays. Must be a native speaker or fluent in French, German, Spanish or Italian, and at least 21 years of age


Fruit picking

Strawberry season in the UK depends on the weather, but generally lasts from May through August. During this time farmers are looking for seasonal workers to pick strawberries for cash. The rate varies according to market prices of strawberries and the farmer involved. Other jobs available include checking the strawberries, weighing them, making strawberry jam, packing strawberries, labeling of jars, and selling in the shop.

Accommodation available depends on the farmer, and often there is no contract of employment.

The Harvesting Opportunities Permit Scheme

HOPS is a scheme that allows full-time students to work on farms in the UK during the planting and harvesting season. The Harvesting Opportunities Permit Scheme HOPS is part of the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme SAWS, which was introduced by the UK government after the second world war to help meet the shortfall in labour available to farmers in the UK from the local labour market when they most need to increase their work-force temporarily, that is - during the sowing and harvesting season.

The agricultural industry in the UK is a large employer of seasonal workers who carry out activities such as sowing, harvesting, sorting and packing. Approximately 75,000 seasonal workers are employed throughout the UK under HOPS every year. Most are full-time students aged between eighteen and twenty five. The majority, are from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union countries, some are from the Commonwealth of countries and more recently some are from China.
You cannot make a direct application for employment under the Harvesting Opportunities Permit Scheme HOPS on your own behalf, but rather, you have to be referred by your University or other Institute of learning.

Cruise ships

Europe has many large rivers, and of course the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Ships operate from the northern parts of Scandinavia and Norway down to the north coast of Africa and east to Turkey. The size of the boats varies, from huge ships carrying thousands of passengers down to smaller, more intimate vessels accommodating a few couples (usually barges).
